Tattoo Program Instructor: Alex Queris Calderón
Alex has been working in this trade since 1996. He has worked at and owned multiple tattoo shops throughout his career. It is now a wonderful pleasure for him to teach, mentor, and be of the highest service to all prospective students. Working in the same twenty-mile radius for the past 25 years has allowed him to watch and understand trends in the trade. More importantly it allowed him to watch the life of a tattoo over time. This experience makes it possible for him to design tattoos that are meaningful and beautiful to the grave. Also, working through a tattoo apprenticeship as a body piercer introduced a higher level of sterile procedure that, at the time, was not common practice. Sharing these precautions with the tattooers of the time has helped make the trade much safer for the tradesmen as well as those receiving tattoos. These will be the main intentions of the teachings he will share. Helping future tattooers realize the responsibilities and opportunities that come from the intimate human contact in this trade is important to him.
Tattoo Program Advisor: Sophia Bennett
Who: I am an advisor, a teacher, a good listener, and loyal friend. I am equally as strong as I am soft, as emotional as I am logical. I strive to embrace the beauty of duality. Libra sun, Leo moon, Gemini rising.
Inspiration: compassion inspires me to be better, for myself and others.
Favorite way to let loose: I love to dance and wiggle! I often spend hours rhinestoning clothing and accessories. Spending time laughing, crying, and having deep conversations with friends (while rhinestoning) is top tier.
Intention: To touch hearts and encourage people to connect to their mind, body, and their community on a deeper level. My name means “wisdom” and I aspire to live up to it.
Favorite quote:
“Usually, our concept of compassion or love refers to the feeling of closeness we have with our friends and loved ones. Sometimes compassion also carries a sense of pity. This is wrong, any love or compassion which entails looking down on the other is not genuine compassion.
To be genuine, compassion must be based on respect for the other, and on the realization that others have the right to be happy and overcome suffering, just as much as you. On this basis, since you can see that others are suffering, you develop a genuine sense of concern for them.”
